68% can't read proficiently

Have you ever wondered what happens to kids who can’t read? What does their future look like…struggling with math, history, science. Failing classes. Dropping out of school. Flipping burgers or pushing a broom for minimum wage. Unemployment. Maybe even jail.

We all know struggling readers. The child next door with dyslexia and ADHD. The child from church whose parents can’t read books to her. The child from the refugee family who's learning English for the first time.

But there's great news too...

95% of kids can become successful readers

with the right kind of instruction!

all children learn to read

Does it surprise you to know that most teachers aren’t trained to teach struggling readers? It's true. Teachers typically don't learn this in college, and many feel unprepared to teach students with dyslexia, English-language learners, and kids from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who've had limited exposure to books.

"I never knew that I didn't know how to teach reading! I am amazed. I can't put into words how much this has helped me as an educator and as a person."
quote from a REAP-trained teacher

REAP is attacking the problem of illiteracy by training public school teachers—840 so far—to effectively teach reading using scientifically proven, evidence-based approaches. REAP gives teachers the tools they need to transform struggling readers into strong readers with skills that prepare them for school, careers, and a brighter future.

Not only do these strategies help struggling readers to succeed, but they push strong readers to be even stronger. It’s a win-win!

“I wish I could go back and apologize to the struggling readers I taught in the first 12 years of my teaching career…I now know ways to help them and I know they will be successful!”
